The story of how it originated in Portland is this:

In the beginning of the 20th century, Italians were emigrating to New England in large masses. They were hired mostly to lay paving stones on streets or to work as longshoremen on the waterfront. One Italian in particular, however, Giovanni Amato, earned his living by selling freshly baked rolls from a pushcart to his countrymen working on the docks. Due to longshoremen’s requests, Giovanni would add some meat, cheese, and fresh vegetables, and thus, the “Italian Sandwich” was born.

It’s never stated when the first Italian Sandwich was sold, but experts agree that Giovanni started selling them in 1903. By the 1920s, Giovanni opened a shop where people would line up to get themselves this amazing sandwich.
